Company History

Founded 25 years ago in Hilton Head, SC by media entrepreneur Marc Frey, the company started out with a single publication Golfer’s Guide a visitor oriented magazine. Over time it grew into a multi-regional network of 26 publications across North America reaching 3 million golf enthusiasts annually making it the third largest golf publication in the USA. The company took advantage of the changing technology trends and implemented a strong web presence, selling discounted tee times on an e-commerce platform and offering web and e-newsletter services to its 1,000 + clients. During the 2007- 2009 years and following the golf industry was hit hard fighting declining participation and eroding pricing. The Golfer’s Guide network was sold off in pieces and the company eventually dissolved.

Parallel to the national expansion FM bought a small newsprint magazine MONTHLY which traditionally served the needs of primary and secondary homeowners in Hilton Head the company quadrupled its sales over the years and today serves as the premier city magazine for Hilton Head and Bluffton reaching over 100,000 readers a month on its multimedia platform.

In the last 5 years, an expansion in the visitor publication segment brought along Fork&Fun, a menu oriented restaurant guide and the Vacation Guide. Combined with its recent launch of ShopMoreLocal.org and 2 successful events Frey Media has grown from a single employee office into the largest local media company in the Lowcountry employing a team of 15 dedicated professionals and a network of contributing writers, photographers, graphic artists and professionals. Steeped in tradition and with a vision toward expansion the company is well positioned for the future.



Marc Frey

Marc Frey was born with ink in his blood. His grandfather established a printing and publishing company in Zurich, Switzerland, which his father expanded considerably.

After completing high school and an undergraduate degree in business administration, Frey absolved his mandatory Swiss military service. Instead of accepting a promotion to become an officer he moved to Paris to hone his craft and worked at the world-renowned advertising agency Publicis as a media planner for 2 years.

Wanting to round out his education, Frey attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies and graduated with an M.B.A and minor in foreign affairs.

In 1982 Frey became the youngest CEO of a major European company (1,000+ employees) and led a turn-around for the Jean Frey Group. Major accomplishments included a 38% revenue growth while reducing the debt structure at the same time; establishing “Weltwoche” as the premier influencer publication, negotiating a 10-year print contract for the Atlantic edition of Newsweek and obtain a license for Forbes magazine for the German speaking markets.

In 1987, the company was sold to a larger holding company and Frey stayed on as the CEO for another year through the subsequent IPO. As the CEO of Berichthaus AG, Frey managed large real estate holdings and oversaw the investment banking side of the business.

In 1992 Frey, his wife Anuska and their two sons moved to Hilton Head, SC, USA, where he started his own media company Frey Media; which has grown into the Lowcountry’s premier publishing and marketing company encompassing several brands.

When not working, Frey can be found playing tennis, riding the bike with his dog, cooking or enjoying the Arts both locally and abroad. Through his opinion column “Last Call”, serving on the Mayors Vision Task Force, speaking engagements and acting as the marketing arm for not for profit organizations Frey has been actively involved in the community.
